The Sigma 28-70 F2.8
The Sigma 28-70 F2.8 seems to have fallen from “hype” to another kit camera replacement and I understand why. First, this isn’t a comprehensive review but rather my experience with the lens. Hopefully, this will help a bit in regard to the lens and whether or not this is right for you.
I am not - nor have not - been sponsored by Sigma, at the time of writing, everything here is my own thought. With that out of the way, let’s take a look at what I used before going into specifications.

The Sigma 28-70 is a bit of an interesting one, I say this because Sigma already has a 24-70, and while I haven’t used it my best guess is that the 28-70 was to help segment away from wide-angle lenses and build their own category while reducing weight. The 28-70 comes in at 830g or 1.8lbs. This weight might not be staggering to some but it was enough for me to have balancing issues on my Zyhun Crane and tip the camera lens first if it sat on anything that wasn’t a tripod. However, after some time I realized that it wasn’t much of a problem for what I was using it for.
“…for something sub $800 I couldn’t have been happier.”
There will be a gallery below don’t worry.
I never had the kit lens as I thought of it as a waste of money. So this was a pleasant surprise to use. The 28-35mm range was refreshing but did come with its distortion. A quick fix in Lightroom however was able to rid it right away and if you’d like to see the edit plus the slight vignette this lens produces, I urge you to visit the video linked here.
This is my everyday lens, I carry this lens with me everywhere I go. I love 55-70mm and the wider focal lengths come in handy too. This is the first written blog about a lens and I hope to do more in greater detail later but the fact is this lens and this the amount of fun I had taking this around California with me was great. I urge that if you did not get a kit lens to buy this lens. The fact that you could buy a 12-24mm elsewhere makes me glad I didn’t overspend with this option. But I want to preference this, I used this lens as a jack of all trades lens, it wasn’t a stellar S-tier lens but for something sub $800 I couldn’t have been happier.
